Camera not working in Discord
If your camera works in the browser test but not in Discord, the wrong camera is selected inside Discord or it lacks permission. Confirm the camera first, then fix Discord.
Step-by-step fix
-
Confirm the camera works: run the CheckMyMic webcam test.
-
In Discord, open the video settings and select the correct camera.
-
Make sure your video isn't turned off inside Discord.
-
Grant Discord camera permission at the OS level, then restart Discord.
Frequently asked questions
Camera works in the test but not Discord — why?
Discord has its own camera selector. Open its video settings and choose the same camera that showed a preview in the test.
Why does Discord show a black screen?
Another app may be holding the camera. Close other video apps, then restart Discord.
The camera still won't show in Discord — what else can I try?
Update Discord, then sign out and back in — camera lists cache hard. Confirm the camera still previews in the CheckMyMic webcam test, and check our webcam guide for your operating system: OS privacy toggles silently block desktop apps more often than Discord itself misbehaves.
Why does Discord's video preview freeze or glitch?
Open User Settings → Voice & Video and use the Test Video preview. If it freezes there, toggle the H.264 hardware acceleration / OpenH264 options in the same panel and retest — Discord's hardware encoding path breaks on some GPU drivers, and falling back to software fixes the freeze.
